As we wrap up the final days of Summer, it’s time to look to the next season and prepare our bodies for cooler temperatures and lack of consistent sunshine. Internally, that means switching to foods that thrive in the autumn and winter. Externally, that means upgrading both our workouts and out body care to sustain through the coming seasons.
FOOD: It’s so important to eat seasonally whenever you can. Consuming fruits and vegetables at a time when they are naturally at their nutritional peak helps us thrive as well. So enjoy things like figs, rhubarb, kiwi and pomegranate with gusto! This is also a great time to explore vegetables with distinct flavor profiles like beets, collard greens and arugula.
MOVEMENT: As temperatures drop, it’s more important than ever to move our bodies. Resist the urge to hibernate and shut down your body, by choosing exercises that work well in cooler climates. Now is a good time to take up conditioning exercises like yoga, pilates and deep stretching, to keep your muscles long and your joints limber. This doesn’t mean you have to compromise muscle strength; there are plenty of challenging poses and movements to keep you sweating and in stellar shape.
SKIN CARE: Now is the time to amp your skin care routine to meet the coming season. Cool weather can leave skin dry and irritated, so trade your light body lotions for more substantial formulas like creams and balms. Your face care routine may also need an extra boost with a facial oil or a deeply moisturizing serum. Pay particular attention to nail cuticles, lips and your eye area as well.
Here’s to crisp days and cozy nights. No matter what Autumn brings, may you be healthy and balanced through it all.
