FROM THE MAT: Adila Karim

“Thanks to my big sister, I’ve been working out for as long as I can remember…13 years old, to be exact. I was a spindly preteen who probably needed every calorie I had, but there I was, jumping and kicking in sync with Janet Jones as we did The Firm every morning. I did that video faithfully into my late 20s, until I discovered Jillian Michaels and made the switch to a more sculpted physique. While weight loss has never been an issue for me, staying physically fit has always been a priority. As I move through my 40s, I’ve become even more keenly aware of the importance of being kind to my one and only vessel, as it shifts and adjust to life’s inevitable changes. I’m in awe of the fact that this body has brought 2 complete human beings into the world, and continues to propel me forward with grace. I’ve learned that if I treat my body well now, it will treat me well later. Admittedly, I don’t work out as consistently as I used to, but I continue to stay active with a variety of methods from weight lifting to yoga. I’ve recently discovered trail riding which I LOVE because it connects me to nature in a way that working out indoors can’t. It’s a great way for me to clear my mind, get my heart rate up and breathe a little. Because a breath of fresh air is all the medicine my soul really needs.”
